Comparing Lists - ChatGPT; is it Reliable for Recommendations?

According to a report from Australia, which considered the responses of 1,370 people from several different coffee shops. Below are what the respondents chose to be their priority factors when choosing a coffee shop, the percentages corresponding with the number of them who ranked these factors in their top five.

Coffee taste/strength – 88%
Coffee quality – 87%
Convenient location 84%
Pleasant ambience – 76%
Quick service 73%

Australians are known to be the ultimate coffee snob, playing a huge part in their culture, having put their nose up to the notorious Starbucks, closing all shops back in 2008. And so these will be the factors I will be using to determine the order of this list.

To have a basis of what coffee shops to visit and rank accordingly, Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer, better known as ChatGPT was used to answer "Top 10 coffee shops in Glasgow". The artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot gave the following answers:

1. Papercup Coffee Company
2. The Steamie
3. Avenue G Cafe
4. Laboratorio Espresso
5. Riverhill Coffee Bar
6. Kaf Coffee
7. McCune Smith Cafe
8. MILK Cafe
9. Tinderbox
10. Buchanan Street Coffee

To note, as ChatGPT is still in its infancy stage it remains to have much progress to go before it will be completely up-to-date with live information from the internet. As such, the tenth position 'Buchanan Street Coffee' cannot be sourced, whether this used to be a cafe or is a mistake on ChatGPT's behalf is unknown. Although more likely have closed, as positions seven, three, and two are now closed down, unfortunately, you won't be able to try out these coffee shops.

So we will opt to use instead Cafe Nero, Greggs, Starbucks, and Costa based in Glasgow. These have the highest amount of coffee stores around the UK, as well as being the most widely recognised coffee shop brands. The list now looks like this:

1. Papercup Coffee Company
2. Costa
3. Starbucks
4. Laboratorio Espresso
5. Riverhill Coffee Bar
6. Kaf Coffee
7. Greggs
8. MILK Cafe
9. Tinderbox
10. Cafe Nero

Will these coffee shops in reality really match up to expectations?

We will examine the Top 10 list given by ChatGPT in the following blog posts, keep your eyes peeled as you will not want to miss out on the opportunity to finally find out 'Does ChatGPT actually give good recommendations?'. Not only this but will allow both native coffee lovers in Glasgow and those travelling to the city the ultimate guide to a great cup of coffee.

Papercup Coffee Company Coffee taste/strength 5 Coffee quality 5 Convenient location 5 Pleasant ambience 5 Quick service 5 Papercup Coffee Company was one coffee shop I genuinely could not find a fault in regarding these factors, or any for that matter. One of the top-tasting coffees I have ever tried, the strength of my coffee was spot on. The quality from this little cafe is outstanding, you can tell from the taste of this cup, that the beans used have been freshly ground and of high quality, allowing for a more in-depth nuttiness and natural sweetness to my latte while still being smooth. The ambience was idyllic, with welcoming staff and comfortable seating, having some booth seats with lots of cushions, easy to relax once I entered, with low soothing music playing. I was served almost immediately on arrival in the Papercup Coffee Company cafe, and so overall I thoroughly enjoyed my experience here and plan on returnin...

For those who have grown up in Glasgow they may have experienced the vast majority of what the city has to offer, when it comes to to their 'morning coffee fix', with coffee shops popping up anywhere and everywhere in and around the city. For locals getting their daily caffeine fix it is an easy option for them, with no need for a thought process first thing early on a typically rainy day in the city. Greggs Coffee taste/strength 4 Coffee quality 4 Convenient location 5 Pleasant ambience 2 Quick service 3 One of my regulars, more a bakery than a coffee shop, taste and strength are both up to standard, a robust taste, which I enjoy. They use a blend of fairtrade Arabica and Robusta beans, being of fine quality. The location gets top marks, there being so many stores in Glasgow, having the most Greggs stores than any other city in the UK, ranging from drive-thrus, sit-in and takeaway-only stores. Since not all stores have sit-in areas, the ones that do not have much ambience, though being a bakery that might not be a priority for them. Stores tend to be hectic at certain times leading to a longer than average wait. 6. Kaf Coffee Coffee taste/strength 5 Coffee quality 5 Convenient location 4 Pleasant ambience 4 Quick service 4 This little cafe in the West End of the city, not far from the University of Glasgow has delicio...
